Obituary

Carolyn S. (Crone) Beatty

DOVER - Carolyn S. (Crone) Beatty, 76, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 19, 2019 at ManorCare Kingston Court.  She was the wife of the late Rev. Richard R. Beatty and the late Rev. Robert C. MacLeod.

Carolyn Shelly Crone, a middle child of six siblings, was born on November 15, 1942, the daughter of the late Luther H. and Ruth (Shelly) Crone. Luther was known as "the barefoot farmer" with pick-your-own strawberry patches, and Ruth was a beloved school teacher.

Upon graduation from Dover High School, Carolyn went to NorthEast Bible Institute (now University of Valley Forge) where she met Bob MacLeod, the life of the party, on a choir tour. They were married and had two children:  Cindy and Steven.

Carolyn devoted herself to ministry as a pastor's wife of an Assemblies of God (AG) minister— not once, but twice! She lost her first husband, Robert, to a stroke, and remarried in five years, to Richard, a man who loved memorizing the Word of God, and political trivia.

Carolyn enjoyed cooking and baking from an early age, and spent much of her time in the workforce as a caterer, cook, cake decorator, and creator of fancy food art. From the York Country Club to the Caterpillar plant cafeteria; from upscale restaurants and resorts, to her own home pie-baking business (simply called Carolyn's Pies), she had a winning way with food services.

Carolyn loved singing in harmony; in trios and quartets with her siblings and cousins, in choirs at church and Bible School, and just sitting around the table with the family, having an impromptu hymn-sing. She was one of the "Sisters of Joy" in a ladies' a-cappella trio, caroling through the halls, aisles, and streets of Kittanning and Western PA.

Carolyn loved her family: she cried when she left home to join her husband in ministry; she cried when her daughter took her grandchildren all the way to Fairbanks, Alaska, to minister (at an AG church); and she cried when her granddaughter took her great-grandchildren to minister at a church in the "middle of nowhere" in Missouri (also AG)— but she rejoiced knowing that her sacrifice in serving the Lord had been rewarded with a spiritual legacy in her children multiple times over!

Though she struggled with chronic health issues, and the last few years of her life were physically difficult, Carolyn loved living closer to her brothers and sisters and extended family. She had always wanted to come home to Dover, the home of her father and his father before him. She loved having family stop by to visit, bring her fresh produce, play the piano, and catch up on all the family news. Dorcas, Andrea, and Pat Shaw were especially good to her in those ways.

Carolyn leaves behind two sisters, Dorcas S. Eaken, Dillsburg, PA, and Denise L. Repman (Dan) of Harmony Grove, PA; and a brother, Marlin S. Crone (Andrea) of Dover. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Joseph J. Crone (Jean); sister, Jane S. Myers (Barry); brother-in-law, John R. Eaken; and sister-in-law, Nadine Crone.

She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Renee (married to Rev. Paul R. McDonald) of Columbia, MO; her son, Steven Robert MacLeod, of York; her two grandchildren, Melia Lynne (married to Rev. Isaiah D. Jesch) of Nelsonville, MO, and Rev. Brenden Paul R. McDonald (married to Taylor Elaine) of LaSalle, IL.; and two great-grandchildren: Tobiah Daniel Jesch, age 6, and Julia Gail Jesch, age 2, both of Nelsonville, MO.

All are invited to attend the viewing at 10:00 a.m. and the funeral at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at Rohlers Assembly of God, 761 Rohlers Church Rd., Dover. A short interment will follow in Rohlers Mountain View Cemetery, Dover.  Officiating are Rev. Edward J. Rowand, pastor of Rohler's Assembly of God, and Rev. Donald R. Belch, pastor of Eastside Assembly of God.
