Eugene Spahr
DOVER - Eugene E. Spahr, age 94, passed away on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at ProMedica York South. His 71-year marriage to the late Jean M. (Shermeyer) Spahr, who died March 24, 2021, was truly a match made in heaven.
Born August 1, 1927 in Dover Township, Gene was the son of the late Henry C. and Mary E. (Eyster) Spahr. He graduated in 1945 from Dover Area High School. Upon his father's passing, Gene assumed responsibility for managing the family farm. While he retired from farming after 62 years, shortly thereafter he became a groundskeeper for Outdoor World in Gettysburg, a position he held for over 20 years. During those years, he also would work as a delivery man for Wolfgang Candy. Whether caring for the animals or spending endless hours mowing acres of land, Gene knew the value of a day's work. He did not retire until he was 85. While everyone respected his tremendous work ethic, Gene will also be remembered for his sincere kindness, devotion to family, wry wit and gentle humor.
A devoted member of Paradise Holtzschwamm Lutheran Church in Thomasville, Gene demonstrated his faith by example, always ready to help a friend, family member, or neighbor in need.
He is survived by three sons, Donald E. Spahr and companion, Movita Blum of Reading, David A. Spahr and wife, Jennifer of York and Steven O. Spahr and wife, Annette of Camp Hill; seven grandchildren, Michael Schaeberle, Matthew Spahr, Erin Snyder, Ryan Spahr, Ellery Spahr, Aaron Spahr and Riley Spahr; six great grandchildren; and a sister, Eva J. Hoffman of Baltimore. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
There will be a private graveside service at the convenience of the family in Salem Union Cemetery, Dover. His pastor, the Rev. Sigrid Hipkiss, will officiate. Emig Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Inc., Dover, is serving his family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Paradise Holtzschwamm Lutheran Church, 3241 Church Rd., Thomasville, PA 17364.
