Alice L. Becker
DOVER – Alice L. (Johns) Becker, 98, former resident of Johnstown, PA, entered into rest at 8:02 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, 2026 at Misericordia Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in York, PA. She was the wife of the late William Charles Becker, to whom she was married for 48 wonderful years, and the loving companion of Lester Thomas of Dover, with whom she shared a deep and committed bond since 2011.
Born November 21, 1927 in Johnstown, Alice was a daughter of the late Clark B. and Leona (Wolford) Johns.
Alice had a wonderful life in Johnstown. She attended Southmont High School and after raising her two sons, she furthered her education at The PA Rehabilitation Center (now the Hiram G. Andrews Center) and went on to offer her kind heart and compassion to others as a social worker at The City-County Clinic of Johnstown. She loved working with youth and was a member of Calvary U.M. Church in Johnstown where she was very proud to be the Children’s Choir Director for many years. Alice generously shared her time as a camp counselor for Jumonville Christian Camp in Uniontown, as well as being very active with Camp Allegheny in Stoystown. She and her husband enjoyed volunteering at Arbutus Park Manor helping with crafts and activities for the residents.
After her husband’s death in 1994, Alice moved closer to her family in Dover, PA in 1998, and started a “Second Act” to her life. She quickly formed many close friendships including a group of ladies affectionately known as the "Well Kept Women" who met for breakfast nearly every day. Alice became a Dover Lioness and a member of Zion U.M. Church in York, singing joyfully in the choir. A gifted singer and lover of music, she was also a member of the York Symphony Chorus.
Above all, Alice cherished time spent with her family. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother to all, always offering love, warmth, and a smile — and she never forgot her lipstick. She found joy in simple moments, like afternoons playing cards or dominoes. Alice was especially fond of dogs. She doted over her poodle Buffy after becoming an empty nester. Her buddy Max helped her transition to her new life in Dover. After Max’s passing, Riley became her sidekick during her later years. Through every chapter of her life, Alice’s devotion to her family and her furry companions was unwavering.
In addition to Lester Thomas, Alice is survived by her two sons, William Clark Becker and wife, Vanessa of Macungie and George Scott Becker and wife, Suzanne of York; three grandchildren, Christopher Becker, Carrie Becker (Joel), and Benjamin Becker; great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Vivian Becker; and the many adopted members of the Thomas family. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Annabelle Mishler and husband, Harold.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the service to celebrate Alice’s life at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2026 at Zion U.M. Church, 1030 Carlisle Rd., York with her pastor, the Reverend Joshua Rhone, officiating. Visitation and a luncheon will follow. Burial will be private in Grandview Cemetery, Johnstown at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Emig Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Inc., Dover.
