YORK – Alma L. Stambaugh, 93, entered into rest Tuesday, December 19, 2023 at her home.
She was born September 8, 1930 in Dover Township. She was the daughter of the late Melvin and Margaret (Julius) Jacobs. She was the wife of Norman A. Stambaugh, Jr. whose life was cut short much too young at the age of 43. She lived in the home in which she was born for 70 years of her life. Alma was a very good student in school and graduated from Dover Area High School from the class of 1948. Her life dream was to be a good wife and mother to her family, and that she was. Shortly after her high school graduation, she cared for her grandfather, then her father and followed by her mother, in five short years time until their passing. She took in and cared for several other relatives as well. Upon the passing of her parents, Alma assumed the role of homemaker, farm manager and wonderful mother to her two daughters. During the summers of her 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, she could be found driving the hay baler in the fields for a change of scene from domestic work.
The home and hearth as well as church were the center of her life. She was a member of Salem U.C.C. in Dover where she played the piano, both for the church and the Men’s Choir for many years and taught children’s Sunday School. Alma was involved with Girl Scouts and 4-H clubs while her girls were involved in each. She gave 125% to their activities. As her three grandsons were born, Alma assumed the role of caregiver while her daughters returned to work. No better education could have been made possible for the boys then being with their grandmother and the farm activities from which to learn and experience.
Alma was much loved by her Stambaugh nieces and nephews who visited the farm often and in some cases, worked on the farm during the summers. Life on the farm found her gardening and preserving many foods for the family. Alma always gave her best to her family and friends. We lost one of the greats with Alma’s passing. You were our family’s rock, the glue that held us together. We hope you know in your final days how many people prayed for you. You shall be missed but never be forgotten for all you did for us and meant to us. An amazing role model.
Alma had two daughters, Joane M. Haines and husband, Peter, and Diane L. Moyer; three grandsons, Matthew Moyer and wife, Allyson, Adam Haines and Jacob Haines and wife, Rebecca; and six great grandchildren, Morgan, Emerson, Cyrus, Jessup, Lyda and Jude. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Paul L. Jacobs.
Following cremation, relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Alma’s memorial service at 11 a.m. and the visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at Salem U.C.C., 2705 W. Canal Rd., Dover. Burial will take place privately in Salem Union Cemetery. Officiating will be Pastor Don Clark. Arrangements have been entrusted to Emig Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Inc., Dover.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the York County 4-H, 2401 Pleasant Valley Rd., Suite 101, York, PA 17402-9600; or Salem U.C.C., 2705 W. Canal Rd., Dover, PA 17315.
A special note of thanks to Amedisys Hospice, especially John, Carol, Brittany, Marilyn and care giver, Rose. You gave your all to Alma as well as the family. Your compassion and care was excellent. Thank you.
