Carl Eugene Rishel

Carl Eugene Rishel age 90, of Dover, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2026 in his home, surrounded by family. He was the loving husband of Dorothy C. (Ermold) Rishel. The couple celebrated 62 years of marriage on August 17, 2025.

Born on May 11, 1936 in Emigsville, Pennsylvania, Carl was the son of the late Lloyd and Pauline (Snyder) Rishel. He graduated from North York High School, Berean Bible School, Elizabethtown College, and did graduate studies at Millersville University. He taught at Elizabethtown High School, Christian School of York, Lancaster Christian School, Grace Baptist School of Carlisle, Dayspring Christian Academy, and Logos Christian Academy, for 48 years. After his retirement he was a substitute teacher at many local private and public high schools until the age of 85.

Carl enjoyed reading, playing strategic games, coaching track & field, international travel, historical war films, remembering dates and telling stories. He was known for his wit, enthusiasm, great heart, persistence, personal interest in his students, neighbors, and friends. Carl and his wife Dorothy hosted five different international exchange students over the years. Above all he loved the Savior, respected the Bible, was committed to the local church, and enjoyed singing hymns.

He is survived by wife Dorothy, siblings Kenneth, Doris (Roberts), Robert, and Michael, three children and their spouses:  Pam and Mark Roth of York, Pennsylvania, Joel and Cindy Rishel of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Nathan and Allison Rishel of Hummelstown, Pennsylvania. Carl and Dorothy have eleven grandchildren: Zachary, Michael, Joshua, Benjamin, Rebecca, Lucas, Martin, Jude, Lander, Claire, and Sierra; and four great-grandchildren: Braelin, Alex, Milo, and Daisy. He was preceded in death by siblings Bernard, Gladys, and Harold.

A viewing will be held at Emig Funeral Home at 47 North Queen Street, Dover, PA, 17315 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 12, 2026. The immediate family will have a private graveside service at Prospect Hill Cemetery in York, Pennsylvania.

The family is planning a Memorial Service at Living Hope Church in Middletown, Pennsylvania to celebrate God’s grace on the life of Carl in the coming weeks.
