George R. Airing
DOVER – George R. Airing, 92, entered into rest at 6:40 p.m. on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at UPMC Memorial. He was the husband of the late Betty J. (Stambaugh) Airing. They were married 68 years.
Born January 10, 1930 in Spring Grove, George was a son of the late John and Verna (Smith) Airing.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served on the U.S.S. Iowa for nine years.
George had 21 years of service for Metropolitan Life where he was a sales manager.
He was a member of Salem U.C.C. in Dover where he served on the treasury/budget board for 17 years and consistory for many years. George served as councilman of Dover Borough and later as mayor for eight years. He was a lifetime member of NWTF and was a former president of the Mason-Dixon Chapter. He was also a member of Dover Union Fire & Hose Co. #1; Shiloh American Legion Post 791; Dover Fish & Game; and Sinnahoning Sportsman Club in Driftwood, PA. George enjoyed fishing for striped bass around the Bay Bridge and later, deep sea fishing at Cape May, NJ. He was involved in starting a hunting camp in Potter County in 1958 and spent his entire life hunting and going to the cabin with family and friends.
He is survived by two sons, Bradley Airing and wife, Deborah of York and Brian Airing and companion, Bonnie Gray of Potter County; two grandsons, Samuel and Cody Airing, both of York; step-grandson, Chad Bailey and wife, Carmen McNally Bailey of Miami, FL; and four great grandsons, Blake and Hunter Airing and Zayon and Jared Bailey. In addition to his wife and parents, George was preceded in death by his sister, Joan Spangler.
Following cremation, services will be at the convenience of the family. Emig Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Inc., Dover, is serving his family.
