George W. Laird 

YORK – George Washington Laird, 92, entered his eternal rest on May 9, 2024 at Senior Commons at Powder Mill.  George was the husband of the late Ruthanna “Ruthie” Louise (Berkheimer) Laird who died March 23, 2023.  They were married 70 years. 

George was born on February 22, 1932 in Dover Township.  He was the son of the late Walter B. and Elsie (Smith) Laird.   

George graduated from Dover Area High School in 1948 and worked as a milkman for Warner’s Dairy before serving in the U.S. Army. 

He had 39 years of service as a truck driver for Fleming, previously Scrivner and P. A. & S. Small Co.  Following retirement, George worked part-time as a delivery driver for Pep Boys in York for 20 years. 

George was a baseball man! He was a lifelong Phillies fan and shared his love of the game as a youth coach for Eastern York County Baseball for 2 decades and umpired for the Susquehanna Youth Baseball League for many years. He managed the York County Union Teener League Team to a Pa. State Championship in 1971. 

George went by many names over the years! He was Dad and Coach! Boog by his Small's buddies. He became Georgie while living at Senior Commons. Will always be Funny George to the kids at Bethany! More importantly, he will remain Pap to his Grand and Great Grand kids forever.

He was a member of Dover Bethany Global Methodist Church, Dover Lions Club for 20 years, Shiloh American Legion Post 791, Longstown Veterans and a lifetime member of Hawks Gunning Club. 

George is survived by his four children, Randy Laird and wife Kim (York, PA), Lindell Gladfelter and husband Kevin (Felton, PA), Gregory Laird and wife Annette (Felton, PA) and Daniel Laird and wife Lori (York, PA); seven grandchildren, Mandi Waltemyer, Rachel Gladfelter, Niki Laird, Seth Gladfelter, Travis Laird, Levi Laird and Stevi Laird and twelve great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Catherine Mundis, Leona Baer and Ruth Carman; and five brothers, David Laird, Paul Laird, Kenneth Laird, Walter Laird and Robert Laird.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend George’s viewing from 12 noon to 1:30 pm., followed by the service on Friday, May 17, 2024 at Dover Bethany Global Methodist Church, 4510 Bull Road, Dover.  Burial will follow at Dover Bethany Cemetery adjacent to the church, where veteran’s honors will be presented by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.  Officiating will be his pastor, the Rev. Salvatore Buonocore.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Emig Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Inc., Dover. Luncheon will follow the burial at the church.

In honor of George, we ask that you wear something red to the service. Phillies gear is encouraged!
