Geraldine A. Shaffer
DOVER – Geraldine A. (Krout) Shaffer entered into rest on her 97th birthday at her home on Tuesday, April 15, 2025. She was the wife of the late Roland R. Shaffer.
Gerry was born April 15, 1928 in Abbottstown, the daughter of the late Albert D. and Purden R. (Grim) Krout.
She was a graduate of North York High School. Gerry had just over 24 years of service for Dover Area High School where she had been the secretary to the Principal. She cared deeply about the students and became affectionately known as “Nana” to almost everyone.
Gerry was a member of Dover U.C.C. where she was a former member of the Women’s Guild. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Starlight Chapter 508; West York AARP; York County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees; and West York VFW Post 8951.
Gerry loved supporting her grandchildren and great grandchildren at their sporting events and other activities. She also enjoyed watching tennis and playing cards and had been a member of three card clubs at one time.
Geraldine is survived by two sons, Dennis L. Shaffer and companion, Pam Mease of Dover and Todd R. Shaffer of Washington DC; a daughter, Beth A. Laughman and husband, Adam W. of York; two grandchildren, Alicia K. Shaffer and companion, Christopher Magnelli of Mechanicsburg and Jason E. Shaffer and wife, Kristine of Dillsburg; three great grandchildren, Paige Magnelli, Lucy Shaffer and Tyson Shaffer; and two brothers, Sterling Krout of York and Gary Krout of Red Lion. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; daughter-in-law, LuAnn Shaffer; and brothers, Wayne and Kenneth Krout.
In the last year of her life, she was lovingly cared for by her amazing caregivers, Samantha French, Melinda Dillon, Amy Smith, Lisa Smith and Charleen McMorris, to whom the family will be forever grateful.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Geraldine’s funeral at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 at Dover U.C.C., 45 W. Canal Rd., Dover. There will be viewings from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 21. 2025 at Emig Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Inc., 47 N. Queen St., Dover and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. Burial will follow in Salem Union Cemetery in Dover. Officiating will be her pastor, the Rev. Cam Richesson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
