Glenn Hively Obituary

Glenn E. Hively

YORK – Glenn Ellsworth Hively, 91, of York, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully of natural causes on July 22, 2025, at Country Meadows in York. Born on April 11, 1934, in York, Glenn was a dedicated husband, father, and a pillar of the local landscaping community.

For 42 years, Glenn owned and operated Hively Landscapes, formerly Hively Farm & Nursery, leaving a living legacy throughout York County and its surroundings. He took great pride in beautifying the area, famously noting the many trees he and his trusted workers planted.  Known for his hardworking spirit, Glenn never shied away from a challenge – no job was too big or over the top.  In his early years, he also farmed cattle and pigs, further demonstrating his commitment to hard work.

A proud Army veteran, Glenn served from 1956 to 1958.  For 44 years, he shared a devoted marriage with his wife, Barbara (Smeltzer) Melhorn Hively.  Together, they traveled to 49 states by motor home, savoring adventures across the county.  Glenn was also an active member of Church of the Open Door, Shiloh.

Glenn is survived by his wife Barbara; his son, Donald G. Hively; daughter, Barbara Hively-Hartsough; stepson, Wade Melhorn; six grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Julia (Drawbaugh) Hively and step-daughter, Wendy Bowman.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Glenn’s viewing from 10 to 11 a.m. followed by the funeral at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 28, 2025 at Cornerstone Bible Church, 3500 Cardinal Lane, Dover, where veteran’s honors will be presented by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.  Burial will be private in Salem Union Cemetery, Dover.  Officiating will be Pastor Matthew I. Sandorfi. Arrangements have been entrusted to Emig Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Inc. in Dover.
