Harold Rishel Obituary

Harold L. Rishel

DOVER – Harold L. Rishel, 87, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, August 11, 2021 at Providence Place in Dover with the love of his life, Carolyn J. (Bear) Rishel by his side.

Harold was born on October 14, 1933 to the late Lloyd E. and Pauline U. (Snyder) Rishel inside the family farm house in Manchester Township. He attended North York High School where he fell head over heels for his city girl, Carolyn. The couple celebrated 68 years of marriage on October 11, 2020.

Harold had a knack for bringing a smile to the face of every person he met. It brought him great joy, as did connecting to his community. Throughout his life, he chose paths that allowed him to do both. He was a milkman, a school bus driver, and a prison guard. He and Carolyn served as house parents at the Milton Hershey School, and together they owned and operated a grocery store and laundromat on Main Street in Dover from 1963-1985. Harold was later employed as a mail courier for Graham Packaging for over 20 years. He was an active member of the Dover Lions Club since 1969, was proud of his perfect attendance record, and was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow award for his dedication to humanitarian services. He was also a member of the Hawk Club, a frequent fan in the stands of local baseball and basketball games, and a lifelong follower of the New York Yankees.

Harold will be remembered for his quick wit, jovial demeanor, and infectious smile. He had a joke for every occasion and loved to pick on the ones he loved most. But it is his incredible love for Carolyn and his devotion to his family that are his greatest legacy.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Kathy A. Rowlands and husband, Chris of Dover, Jeffrey L. Rishel and wife, Erin of York, Beth A. Simms and husband, Bill of Red Lion, and Holly S. Kile and husband, Jerry of Glen Rock; ten grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and five siblings, Carl Rishel, Kenneth Rishel, Doris Roberts, Robert Rishel, and Michael Rishel. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bernard Rishel; and a sister, Gladys Markey.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Harold’s viewing from 9 to 11 a.m. on Monday, August 16, 2021 at Emig Funeral Home, 47 N. Queen St., Dover. A private burial will be officiated by brother Carl at Suburban Memorial Gardens in Dover.
