James Leslie Detar
DOVER – James Leslie Detar, 66, entered into rest at 11:53 a.m. on Sunday, December 17, 2023 at UPMC Memorial in York. He was the husband of the late Carol A. (Hanners) Detar and the late Bertha M. (Lipscomb) Detar.
Born April 30, 1957 in Greensburg, PA, James was a son of the late Leslie D. and Barbara Ann (Oplinger) Detar. He grew up in Adamsburg, PA and graduated from Hempfield Area School District in 1975.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force and retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service. James also had 20 years of service for the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of the NRA, VA and American Legion. James loved riding dirt bikes, quads and motorcycles in the forest. More recently, he had a passion for cruising. He also enjoyed NASCAR races, attending concerts, bowling, movies, visiting zoos, going on safaris as well as watching football and wrestling.
James is survived by his brother, Richard A. Detar of Lancaster; his sister, Kathleen A. Kunkle and husband, Timothy of Greensburg; four nieces and nephews, Tiffanie Patrick and husband, Addam, Timothy Kunkle and wife, Carly, Nicole Kunkle and Joshua Kunkle; seven great nieces and nephews; and his girlfriend, Karen Brennor of Dover.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend James’ funeral at 12 noon and the viewing from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, December 23, 2023 at Emig Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Inc., 47 N. Queen St., Dover. Veteran’s honors will be presented by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will take place privately in Mount View Cemetery in Tunnelton, WV.
