John W. Shearer
YORK – John W. Shearer, 80, entered into rest early Friday, October 27, 2023 at UPMC Memorial. He was the loving husband of Cathy J. (Blubaugh) Shearer. The couple celebrated 51 years of marriage on August 26, 2023.
Born March 7, 1943 in Harrisburg, he was a son of the late Robert D. and Josephine E. (Boova) Shearer.
John graduated in 1961 from Newport High School and in 1965 from Shippensburg University with a B.S. in Education, later earning his Master’s Degree. He had 36 years of service as a mathematics teacher at West York High School. During his time at the school, he also coached track, and in 1979 helped lead the 4x100 relay team to a state title. Additionally, he went on to serve several years as Athletic Director for the Bulldogs prior to his retirement and was recognized by the PIAA for serving as a Pennsylvania State track official for over 25 years.
He was a lifelong Dodgers fan whose highlight was to see them win the World Series in person, exactly three years to the day, before his passing. John also enjoyed golfing and spending time with his grandkids.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by his son, Anthony Shearer and wife, Rachel; daughter, Angela Bair; five grandchildren, Sadie, Remington, Kira, Brylee and Annabelle; sister, Marcia Ramer of Newport; and brother, Robert Shearer and wife, Reva of Dover.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 3, 2023 at St. Rose of Lima Church, 950 W. Market St., York with the Rev. Dominic Azagbor, OP, presiding, followed by The Rite of Committal and burial in Suburban Memorial Gardens. There will be a viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, November 2nd at Emig Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Inc., 47 N. Queen St., Dover.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Foundation for the West York Area School District at 1891 Loucks Road, Suite 100, York, PA 17408.
