Niles Hudson Shearer

DOVER - Niles Hudson Shearer, 92, passed away on Wednesday, January 18, at UPMC Memorial.  He was the husband of the late Thelma R. Shearer for seventy years until her passing in 2021.
 
Niles was born in Dover Township on April 5, 1930, a son of the late Clair M. and Dora A. (Stambaugh) Shearer.

Niles was a life-long member of Salem Lutheran Church of Dover and a 1948 graduate of Dover Area High School.  He and Thelma owned and operated their family farm in Dover Township for nearly sixty years.  Farming gave his life purpose and meaning.  Some of his best days were spent planting corn, harvesting wheat, or baling hay.

Niles is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Barry Emig, and his son and daughter-in-law, Crist and Joyce Shearer.  He also leaves his four grandsons, Matthew and Timothy Emig, and their wives, Cheryl and Meghan, as well as Andrew and Jordan Shearer, and their wives, Brittney and Megan.  He is survived by his great-grandchildren, Katherine, Jacob, Molly, Gracie, and Kaylee.

Additionally, Niles leaves his brothers, Darwin and Carl Shearer and his wife, Diane.  Extended family members include Thelma's brother, Leroy Crone, and her sisters, June Sunday and Evelyn Schaeffer.  He is also survived by twenty nieces and nephews.  His sister, Maryellen Myers, preceded him in death.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Celebration of Life Service to be held on Saturday, January 28, at 2:00 pm at Salem Lutheran Church, 2001 George Street, Dover, PA.  Niles will be laid to rest during a private graveside service in Salem Union Cemetery.  Emig Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Inc. is assisting with arrangements.

The family would once again like to express our sincere appreciation to the staff at Providence Place of Dover for the kindness and grace shown to Niles and Thelma during their years in assisted living.
